ASD impacts...
- The senses: Sensations can feel amplified or subdued. This can create sensitivity to sound, light, touch, taste, and even smell.
- Communication: Some people with ASD are unable to speak, or are limited verbally while others have impressive verbal skills and vocabularies. Whether a person is verbal or not, many share an inability to express needs and wants.
- Social Skills: Social skills and communication tend to go hand-in-hand. A person with ASD might not understand social norms, like turn-taking in a conversation, making eye contact, or notice if their friend is happy or sad.
- The way we learn: People with Autism are usually strong visual learners. Autism programs attempt to teach with visuals and fun and tactile activities. Lessons are also developed to teach friendship skills like sharing, taking turns, and identifying others emotions.
- People with Autism have families that they love! They go on family vacations, visit parks, and love places like the zoo, amusement parks, and museums.
- They have interests that they are very knowledgeable about. When they are interested in something they tend to want to learn everything about it, and share about it too. We all have passions and interests in life!
- My students love to play and are amazing runners, jumpers, and little athletes. We have fun in our motor room daily!
- People with Autism have dreams! They grow up to be engineers, doctors, cashiers, computer techs, and other community members.
